The Dutch Tug Thames collided with the City of Waterford in convoy OG 74 Crew rescued by HMS Deptford and transferred to Walmer Castle, two days later, it was bombed.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">S.S. CITY OF WATERFORD<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"nitro-offscreen nitro-lazy-render\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Aplin, Thomas E.,\u00a0<em>Dublin<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Furlong, George,\u00a0<em>Wexford<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Naylor, Samuel,\u00a0<em>Bray, Co. Wicklow<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Murphy, P.,\u00a0<em>Dun Laoghaire<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Kearney, Edward,\u00a0<em>Dublin<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"nitro-offscreen nitro-lazy-render\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">were killed as a result of the\u00a0<em>Walmer Castle<\/em>\u00a0being bombed by German Aircraft two days later while still at sea.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000080;\">Convoys and Insurance<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Initially some Irish ships sailed in convoy, at the insistence of insurance companies. Lloyds of London would insure the ships, cargoes and the lives and health of the crew, provided that they sailed in convoy. Nonetheless, some ships never sailed in convoy. The perceived inability of the Royal Navy to protect them after\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/seswpcourse.hosted7.connect.ie\/index.php\/2024\/03\/21\/remember-clonlara-convoy-og71\/\">convoy OG-71 (click for more)<\/a>\u00a0and experiences of insurance claims after convoy OG-74, changed attitudes. Thereafter Irish ships sailed alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif; color: #000080;\">Convoy OG-74<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">The\u00a0<i>City of Waterford<\/i>\u00a0was in convoy OG74. On 19 September 1941, the Dutch tug\u00a0<i>Thames<\/i>\u00a0collided with\u00a0<i>City of Waterford<\/i>\u00a0and she sank. The crew were rescued by HMS\u00a0<i>Deptford<\/i>\u00a0and then transferred to the\u00a0<i>Walmer Castle<\/i>. Two days later the convoy was attacked,\u00a0<i>Walmer Castle<\/i>\u00a0was bombed and sunk. Five survivors of the\u00a0<i>City of Waterford<\/i>\u00a0died. While insurance was paid for the loss of the ship, life insurance was not paid as, when they died, they were not crew of the\u00a0<i>City of Waterford<\/i>, but passengers of\u00a0<i>Walmer Castle<\/i>.
